5 Powerful Ways to Jumpstart Your Executive Resume by Laura Smith-Proulx. Published by The Ladders.

If you’re like most leadership professionals, you aren’t sure where to start when writing or updating your resume. You might search online for examples in your field or just start jotting down thoughts. Either way, the task can seem daunting, especially if you are trying to convey your true strengths, personal brand and competencies.

Within today’s aggressive career marketplace, the tone and leadership message of your resume must be carefully designed in order to generate an impressive presentation.

Consider the following five strategies when creating an executive resume that is designed to gain more attention and speed up your search:

1 - Position the Key Details First

All too often, critical information is buried on the second page of a resume. Remember that the top half of the first page is prime real estate for your strongest credentials. That’s where you’ll need a tightly worded summary that reflects your qualifications and closely aligns with your precise job target.

Profiles that gain the most attention include distinguishing information. This includes references to expertise in a target industry, accomplishments, prominent degrees and special abilities.

Here’s an example focused on achievement and leadership style, in addition to hard skills:

“Intensely motivated and forthright operations executive with an exceptional record of multi-million dollar cost control. Excel in highly charged settings requiring focused analysis, crisis management and tactical execution. Top achiever, Northwestern MBA and change agent who revitalizes operations through strong service, budget and staffing improvement.”

The benefit to using a profile is that the reader can quickly skim for relevant facts that screen you in, rather than out, during the hiring process.

2 - Include a Branding Statement

Do you remember some of the key slogans used by major companies to advertise their brands? Nearly anyone can recall taglines used by companies such as Nike or McDonalds.

Now the product being marketed is YOU. This means that these same marketing strategies can be applied to the materials you prepare for employers.

A branding statement, in particular, is a short sentence that serves the same purpose as a marketing tagline and is used at the forefront of the resume. You can develop this sentence by jotting down some ideas on what you bring to the table that others don’t.

Here’s an example of what an operations executive with a strong record of workplace improvement could use to sum up relevant qualifications:
“Driving crucial technology utilization, staffing, cost control and process changes that resulted in continual 90-plus percent improvement to operations dynamics.”

Remember to keep your tagline short and to spend considerable time tuning it to reflect your unique value proposition.

3 - Walk the Reader through Your C-A-R Achievements

Many people can assess the results of their work by looking at quantifiable figures and facts – but it’s the story BEHIND the accomplishment that really conveys your personal brand. The C-A-R (Challenge-Action-Result) formula was developed for precisely this reason and is often used as a guide for formulating career success stories.

Think of your past results and work style in terms of the situation you first encountered (the Challenge), what you did to address it (your Action), and what happened next (the Result).

Now, using this model, formulate each achievement into a concise story that reflects each of these components. Remember that these success stories are best represented in bullet-point format on your resume.

4 – Focus Your Message

Too often, a resume at the leadership level will contain so much detail that the overall goal gets lost. In addition, many executives find that they possess a wide range of core competencies that may lend themselves to different jobs.

If you find that your strengths lean towards more than one career goal or job type, so be it; create an offshoot of your original resume that focuses concisely on one position.

You will also need to consider whether the industry focus in your resume truly reflects your goals. Transitioning into another arena? Then remove industry jargon and acronyms that can hold you back in your search.

5 – Back Up Your Success with Testimonials

If you’re familiar with the 360 degree review process, where feedback about your core strengths is used to form a composite picture of your leadership abilities, then you know that what others say about you tends to reflect your true brand. A quote, in particular, can be a striking addition to an executive or senior management resume.

In the context of a job search, feedback from others can be crucial. In addition to supervisors, don’t forget that colleagues and clients can be a strong source for positive feedback.

After you’ve obtained these testimonials, pull out a shortened version to place on your resume as an endorsement. This information can be placed at the beginning or end of your professional profile, or within a separate section on the front page.

For example, a global sales executive can reinforce a brand message of superior results by including a quote from a top corporate officer on a resume, as shown below:

“Drawing on the collective knowledge of those around him, Ken facilitates team communication and collaboration, leading to our strongest year yet.”

As you can see, there are many angles from which to compose your executive resume. Developing a masterpiece that gets attention from employers’ top-tier hiring managers requires a well thought-out resume strategy. Remember to take data prioritization, content and a compelling presentation into account along the way.

Focus Should be Your#1 Priority by Laura Smith-Proulx. Published by Executive Agent.

As you might know, the fact that Internet applications dominate the employment landscape means that you can find online job postings in droves. As more and more job hunters descend upon these same boards in the same droves, however, it can be tough to find (and elicit a response for) the optimum fit.

Your search can seemingly extend into infinity if you fail to focus long enough to communicate your qualifications; remember that your executive credentials represent a targeted solution to employer needs.

Here, I've offered 5 key reasons why focus should be your #1 priority in a leadership job hunt-and how to get it:

  1. Communicating your personal brand is the best way to get employers to take notice.

Personal branding for leadership resumes is rapidly emerging as the optimum way to not only differentiate you from other candidates, but also make it easier for you to access the upper echelon of your target companies.

Conversely, if you fail to brand your unique qualities, you may be approached for jobs that are beneath your abilities, or that are a sideways fit for your core competencies.

The takeaway here is that you need to evaluate not only the results you gain for your employers, but the strategies you employ to produce them. Answer the following questions carefully to mine for this information:

    • What energizes you about work?
    • What reputation have you attained - what are you known for?
    • What kinds of work fit your natural talent?
    • What challenges and settings are a best fit for your experience?
    • What do others say about your contributions?

To make the process easier, remember that you are identifying information that employers need in order make a hiring decision.

  2. No one has time to connect the dots; do it for them!

The hiring audience is just as busy as you are. Considering that recruiters often scan resumes quickly and on electronic devices, brevity is the key for conveying a strong brand.

For example, many leadership professionals use a concise, two-page resume, while offering drill-down capabilities with documents including an Executive Biography, Key Initiatives, or Leadership Addendum.

The bottom line? Stick to a concise (think intense) presentation for your skills, and consider adding a suite of supporting documents to add details that emphasize your value proposition.

  3. Being all things to all people isn't good enough anymore.

If you possess a diverse skill set, that's wonderful, but what do you want to do with it?

While a colorful background can serve as a conversation point, hiring authorities need to see how your talent supports a particular role in their organization.

To deliver a focused presentation, create one resume for each job type. First, identify each career goal, then write your resume centered around it.

Add supporting detail that describes the relevance of your other experience to that same goal, and minimize unrelated information to let the job type emerge as a focal point. Repeat these steps for each job type or goal.

Following these steps may mean that you need to use more than one resume; however, your results will be reflected in the efforts that you take to sharpen your focus.

  4. Automated systems have made the general resume obsolete.

Not only is a "general" resume a job search killer, as it makes your qualifications hard to digest, but it typically lacks sufficient keyword content to successfully pass scanning applications.

Since many companies select only resumes with the appropriate keyword count, focus on one job type becomes even more critical. Add as much keyword and specific job type information as possible in order to address this issue head-on.

If you're stumped for ideas, use job posting descriptions to add areas of skill that represent your experience.

  5. Adding excess information for employers to read only confuses them.

If you remember one thing, make it this: the more information presented that is irrelevant to the goal, the more likely your resume will NOT make the cut.

For this reason, consider very carefully the relevance of the what you present on your resume. Is it tied to your position requirements? Does it support your overall value proposition?

If not, ruthlessly edit the extraneous data to produce a more concise message.

In summary, adding focus to your job search gives you numerous ways to concisely convey your ROI to hiring managers.

Doing so will mean that employers can see the fit based on your personal chemistry and unique contributions-which can lead to a higher-level, more lucrative leadership opportunity.

5 Tips to Capture the Magic of a Cover Letter by Laura Smith-Proulx. Published by JobDig.

Is there any other interviewing technique that will set you apart like a Thank You Letter? Possibly not - and studies have shown that only 20% of candidates remember this crucial step, and of that figure, nearly 80% get hired!

For this reason, I highly recommend adding this strategy to your arsenal of job hunting tools. In addition, it's a great way to be remembered and expand your network - all key steps in today's competitive market.

As a former recruiter, I recall that it was rare for any candidate to remember to thank me after an interview. You can bet that any applicant doing so scored some serious points.

Here are 5 pointers for a Thank You letter that wows employers and puts you in top consideration for a high-powered role:

1 - Personalized is best. In fact, the more of a high-touch feel to your Thank You letter, the better. This means that handwritten cards are a fantastic strategy for interviewees.

One method that works well is to keep blank, business-styled note cards in your car. Take them out after the interview while still in the parking lot, and write your notes right then and there.

You'll find that the information discussed at the interview is still fresh enough that you should have plenty of ideas - plus, you'll impress interviewers with the handwritten approach.

2 - Don't leave anyone out. I've heard from many job hunters that thanking EVERYONE, from the receptionist to the CEO, was key to putting their best foot forward after an interview.

In fact, one such professional who did this reported back that he maintained contact at the company, and even though he wasn't hired right then, was asked to come back a few months later to interview for a more senior-level role.

3 - Immediacy is key. It's best to maintain your relevancy in the minds of hiring authorities, and that means being ready to go as soon as possible after the interview.

Some professionals overnight their Thank You letters to the hiring manager. Others email them promptly (within HOURS) after the interview.

Again, this is a technique that clearly sends the message of your intent regarding the job.

4 - Skip the stalker tactics. While a quick reminder on letterhead can speak volumes about your professionalism, odd gestures like sending a shoe to "get your foot in the door" can backfire big-time.

Keep in mind that your main goal is to be remembered for your strengths and presentation - NOT the fact that you can scare the people who've interviewed you.

5 - Get to the point. The best Thank You letters start by expressing your appreciation of the interviewer's time, and then move on to a concrete example of what interests you about the job.

For example, mentioning that you enjoyed discussing the company's plans for expansion, or noting that the new IT security project sounds like a great area for your contributions, can keep you top-of-mind while indicating that you'd like to be a core contributor.

Closing with a reiteration of your interest is always appropriate, as is a stated declaration that you look forward to future discussions with the interviewer about the position. Keep your letter short!

So, the next time an interviewing opportunity presents itself, remember to maintain your edge with a professional Thank You letter that just might land you the job.

Personal Branding for Success in a Tight Job Market by Laura Smith-Proulx. Published by The Ladders.

If you’re trying to stand out among the multitudes of job hunters today, you’ve certainly found some stiff competition. Gone are the days when you could toss your skills and job responsibilities onto a resume, and expect to get nearly immediate calls for interviews.

It’s not your imagination - the current job market is more demanding. Many professionals are finding that they need that additional edge, above and beyond the traditional resume presentation.

Have you heard of the critical resume element that can make your qualifications stand out among other job hunters and get you into more interviews?

It’s your personal brand.

A personal brand, as defined by branding gurus Tom Peters and William Arruda, represents your “unique promise of value.” In other words, a brand is the distinctive set of natural strengths that employers get when they hire you versus your competition.

It’s important to ensure that hiring authorities can quickly see this information on your resume, because it can increase the volume and quality of your interviews. Plus, it ensures that you are considered for prime opportunities that more closely match your talents.

Here are some tips that will help you assess and quantify your personal brand:

Examine your strengths carefully.

Ask yourself the following questions, and be sure to jot down your answers as a starting point for your brand:
  • What type of work opportunity do you thrive on?
  • When compared to peers, what do you consistently deliver that others do not?
  • What kinds of tasks make your day fly by effortlessly?
  • What do you achieve that consistently adds to the bottom line for your employers?
You’ll notice that these questions focus precisely on what you do best, rather than drawing out the mundane responsibilities associated with your jobs. This specific type of information forms the core of a successful personal brand.

Gather feedback from others.

A key component of your brand is the noticeable value you bring to the workplace. When others commend you for possessing a particular talent or for achieving a strong level of results, this information can underscore your personal brand by serving as a testimonial.

Assess your feedback and answer each of the following questions:
  • What qualities do your supervisors point out as assets (especially during a performance review)?
  • What is the regular response that you receive from customers, colleagues, and other business relationships on your quality of work?
  • What professional abilities do others compliment you on even though they seem to come naturally to you?

The reputation you’ve gained at work can be as strong as your actual competencies. Consider this: many companies compensate employees based not only on what they do, but on what they are capable of doing.

Assess your competition.

In your current role, do you have peers that are tasked with similar duties? If so, what do you regularly accomplish that seems difficult for others to achieve?

Further, what personal style do you bring to the workplace that distinguishes your abilities? You might find, for example, that when challenged with a particular client or situation your colleagues immediately ask for help, while you’re able to confidently manage it with seemingly minimal effort.

Another way to gauge your performance from a competitive standpoint is to measure your success against that of your predecessor in the same role. In addition, what have you accomplished in terms of improvement or turnaround efforts?

The answers here will help you to distinguish yourself from others with the same leadership job function.

In summary, incorporating your personal brand into your resume can make the difference in how employers perceive your qualifications against that of your competition.

Getting called for an interview is much easier when you raise your own and subsequently others’ perceptions of your achievements and unique contributions.
