So your LinkedIn Profile’s all suited up and ready for a job search. Wait… did you use the same overused terms that appear in LinkedIn’s 10 Most Overused Buzzwords List?
Here, you’ll find Specialized, Leadership, Passionate, Strategic, Experienced, Focused, Expert, Certified, Creative, and Excellent taking center stage as overused words.
Ironically, there are similar “fluff words” (shown in Take These Overused, Trite Words Off Your Executive Resume) that apply to your resume. The more cliches employers encounter, the less they can see the ROI in your background.
As an example, you could replace Expert or Experienced with:
I deliver an average 34% revenue increase in Sales Executive roles by identifying and leveraging market trends.
Focused could be stated as:
Global manufacturing leadership as VP Operations that created a 30% annual rise in productivity.
(Note the keyword SEO strategy built into each example.)
It’s the same principle that applies to your resume – don’t show, TELL. Give readers some metrics, details, and context to absorb.
And given LinkedIn’s character limitations, the faster you tell, the harder your Profile will work for your job search.
